Cathy couldn’t seem to get her mind around everything that was happening. She walked across the quiet garden, the grass damp under her sandals. Small solar lights placed around the plantings gave a soft yellow glow to a clump of chrysanthemums here and a weeping cherry there.
She was alone, and that’s what she’d desired desperately all the while Delia was explaining over again what her sister-in-law Julia had said and Grandpa was muttering his satisfaction. Just to be alone and try to figure out what was going to happen.
It was good news, yes. But her experience with specialists had taught her that their offices expected to be paid at the time of the appointment. Was there enough in their bank account to cover a check? Maybe, barely.
And if the orthopedist recommended surgery, what then? Her hope that Grandpa had been remembered in his father’s will had come to nothing. And the very fact that she’d gone looking might turn the Bodine family against her.
If Adam was even now talking to his father about it…
Miz Callie had said something to her, about how sometimes God took her life and turned it upside down. About how, when that happened, she’d had to rely only on Him.
And underneath are the everlasting arms. The scripture echoed in her mind.
Father, if You’re there, if You’re willing to hear me, please guide me. I don’t know what to do. “Cathy?”
She spun around at the sound of Adam’s voice, her heart in her mouth.
“Mama told me about the appointment. She said you looked kind of dazed, so I came out to be sure you were all right.”
She swallowed, the muscles working with an effort, as if they hadn’t been used for a while. “I’m all right.” The words wouldn’t be held back. “Did you tell your father?”
His face seemed to tighten in the dim light. “Tell him what?” His voice was harsh.
“About what I did. Looking at the will.” That had to be it. Why else would he look so severe and remote? “No.”
For a moment she thought she’d heard wrong. “But…when you wanted to talk to him alone, I was sure that was why.”
His mouth compressed into a thin, hard line. In the moonlight, his face seemed stripped down to bare, uncompromising bone. “That was something else. Something private.”
She drew back a little. “I wasn’t meaning to pry.”
“Right. I know.” He shook his head. “Let’s clear the air. I haven’t said anything to my father about your excursion to the courthouse. I won’t.”
“Thank you.” Something was wrong. She could sense it. Something boiled away under the surface, but whatever it was, he wasn’t going to tell her.
“About the appointment—you are going to take Jamie, aren’t you?”
She turned away a little, not sure she wanted that laser-like gaze on her face. “I don’t know.”
“Why not?” he demanded. “It’s what you wanted, isn’t it?”
“Of course it’s what I want. But is it fair to get Jamie’s hopes up? I don’t want to make him think he’s going to be able to walk and run if there’s no way to make that happen.
